This module introduces students to a variety of problems encountered and historical methods utilized in the discipline of ancient history. The focus is threefold: on the nature of ancient history as a discipline, and its relation to history and to Classics; on the various methods employed by significant theorists in approaching the study of ancient history; and on specific problems to which these methods might be suitably applied. Particular attention is devoted to the context, argument, and rhetoric of specific scholarly contributions. Students are encouraged and assisted to familiarize themselves with the history and theory of the discipline as a whole, and to consider the place of their own study within it.
