	Overview
	To guide students in interpreting a selection of written and visual evidence pertaining to women in ancient Greece and Rome. As an examination of the lives of women in Greece and Rome, this module will draw on both textual evidence and material culture to explore female life experiences in the ancient world. The importance of physical environment and cultural context for the study of women in Antiquity will be emphasized, and the module will make use of new approaches in the areas of feminism and gender studies which have informed recent research in this expanding area of classical scholarship.

Overview

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Recognise female mythical and political figures important in Greek and Roman cultures. Select key exemplars to illustrate significant themes and ideas. Discover the ways attitudes to sexuality and gender are constructed. Analyse the evidence for women’s lived experiences in both cultures. Compare the lived experiences of Greek and Roman women. Demonstrate the ability to communicate complex ideas in both oral and written form.

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes One-and-a-half-hour written examination. The mark awarded for a coursework essay will be carried forward to the Autumn Examination and applied if it is to the student's advantage. A coursework essay may not be resubmitted (or submitted for the first time) for the Autumn Examination.
