Module QUANTITATIVE METHODS IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES

Module code: FSS1
Credits: 5
Semester: 1 and 2
Department: SOCIAL SCIENCES
International: No
Overview Overview

FSS1 : QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND ANALYSIS
Aims:
The aims of this module are to:
1. Enable the student to understand and appreciate the critical role that statistical science can play in academic research;
2. Stimulate an inherent interest in statistical thinking;
3. Develop a base for further exploration of other statistical methods.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module, student should be able to:
1. Select the correct method of sampling for quantitative research
2. Manipulate and analyse data using an appropriate software package
3. Represent data in appropriate graphical form
4. Calculate the measures of central tendency, dispersion and position
5. Carry out appropriate relational and inferential testing on data
6. Decide whether to accept or reject their null hypothesis

Outline:
This is a 3 day workshop module. Each day will be split into two sessions. Each session will consist of a combination of explanation, worked examples and practical application. Skills will be consolidated by practice within class periods and a supervised assignment.
During each session students will have the opportunity to use the software to work on the assigned worksheets for that session.
An individual project will be completed by each student at the en.
