The aims of this module are to:
1. Enable the student to understand and appreciate the critical role that statistical science can play in academic research;
2. Stimulate an inherent interest in statistical thinking;
3. Develop a base for further exploration of other statistical methods.


Outline:
This is a 12 week module consisting of one 2 hour session per week. Each session will consist of a combination of explanation, worked examples and practical application. Skills will be consolidated by practice within class periods and a supervised assignment.
During each session students will have the opportunity to use the software to work on the assigned worksheets for that session. They will also be able to work on their end of semester project during this period.
There will be two assignments during this course. An individual project will be completed by each student on a topic relating to the social sciences. Part 1 of this project (which will consist of descriptive statistics) will be submitted during Week 6 and Part 2 (the final project) will be submitted one week after the final class

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, student should be able to:
1. Recognise and explain the basic terms of statistics;
2. Represent data in appropriate graphical form
3. Calculate the measures of central tendency, dispersion and position
4. Manipulate and analyse data using a software package
5. Decide whether to accept or reject their null hypothesis
6. Carry out appropriate relational and inferential testing on data
