Module ILLNESS AND DISABILITY IN CONTEMPORARY FRENCH CULTURE

Module code: FR344
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: FRENCH
International: Yes
Coordinator: Dr Áine Larkin (FRENCH)
Overview Overview

Content warning: some of the content studied on this course contains depictions of physical violence, strong language, sex, emotional distress (De rouille et d’os) and death (Amour).

Course Aims:
Disability studies and medical humanities are relatively new fields of interdisciplinary research in the humanities. Central to this course, which will explore representations of illness and disability in a selection of contemporary French texts and films, will be the question of how to define the key terms ‘illness’ and ‘disability’. Studying work by several modern writers and filmmakers, in light of theoretical reflections on illness and disability, gives us insights into the way they think about bodies and the condition of illness or disability in their particular social and cultural context.
