What social factors influence the French language as it is spoken and written today? This module will first offer students an overview of the field of sociolinguistics and the social history of the French language. It then focuses on four contemporary regional varieties of French. Students will explore the linguistic features and sociocultural significance of the language in Southern France, Canada, Subsaharan Africa, and the US state of Louisiana. This module will contribute to students’ awareness of the many ways in which French is used by diverse populations across the world.
