	Overview
	The aim of this module is to prepare students for the Year Abroad linguistically and interculturally, and to assist them in developing their own learning strategies in academic, linguistic and cultural terms. This will be done through a variety of activities, teaching and presentations. Additionally, students will be exposed to the lived experiences from Final Year students who have spent a year studying, teaching or on placement in a French-speaking country. Skills taught will include writing skills for documentation, for academic study and the social register. Institutions in the French-speaking countries, social and political structures, student life and culture and cultural specificities will be studied in class and through exercises.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Investigate and gather information on practical matters before and during the year abroad e.g. application procedures, information mining, administrative arrangements abroad. Identify academic, linguistic and cultural goals and strategies. Display an ability to structure language learning and intercultural learning. Display writing skills required for everyday activities in the relevant French-speaking country. Display knowledge of social and political structures, student life and culture, and social and cultural specificities of French-speaking countries.

Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a medical certificate).
Penalties: Late submission of assessed coursework or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5% (5 marks) per day. Assessed coursework or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or compelling reasons will not be penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a medical certificate).
