On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• Interpret and reformulate financial statements for the purpose of equity and firm valuation;
• Perform financial statement analysis;
• Understand the underlying sources of firm profitability and firm growth;
• Apply accounting-based equity valuation and other valuation methods to value a company;
• Estimate a firm’s weighted average cost of capital for the purpose of valuing a firm and to determine its optimal use of debt finance;
• Understand the core capital structure theories; and
• Understand the core dividend and stock repurchase theories.

• This module is delivered through four days of module content, but needs to be supported through substantial independent study, reading and research. Lectures are important signposts to learning, but are only part of the educational process. The learning process has therefore been designed to provide students with two broad workload categories: a) Taught lectures with lectures exploring both required and self-directed reading material b) Individual reflection to develop students’ critical thinking skills. This module is structured around a series of lectures, readings, papers, case studies and video materials. A blended approach to teaching will be adopted with technical material presented in video lectures and made available to students before the scheduled face-to-face lectures. This is to aid the assimilation of technical / mathematical concepts and help students to maximise the learning experience during lectures. Problem sets with video solutions will be used to reinforce the understanding of material. Please note that the number of hours for planned learning activities and independent student activities will vary from student to student, depending on their capability to absorb and apply concepts and tools, and write up work. A guidance for students is that one credit is a total of 25 to 30 hours of student effort. Thus a 10-ECTS module can vary in amount of student work between 250 hours and 300 hours.

• Penalties: Students are expected to attend all lectures, seminars, and workshops. Where attendance falls below 75%, a student is deemed to have failed a module. Standard School of Business penalties apply for late submission of assignments; 10% is deducted for each 24 hours (or part thereof) that an assignment is submitted after the official submission deadline. Personal exceptional circumstances policy of the School of Business and University may apply.
