Module CONFERENCE ORGANISATION

Module code: FM801
Credits: 5
Semester: Year-Long
Department: GRADUATE SKILLS
International: No
Overview Overview

Students may have an opportunity, during their research programme, to organise a conference as an individual or as part of an organising committee. The conference may address a general or specific theme and may attract participants from Ireland and/or abroad. This module aims to give students the opportunity to learn how to organise a conference and gain the practical experience of so doing. The student must be centrally involved in organising the conference.

For this module a conference may also be taken to mean a workshop, seminar series or Winter/Summer School. Students are expected to draft and disseminate calls for papers, assess and select papers, invite speakers, identify and invite conference chairs, organise the conference venue, organise travel and subsistence for speakers, make up conference packs, arrange paper streams, administer finances, manage the event on the day and handle publication of any conference proceedings.

Completion of this module requires the student to maintain a reflective journal recording the student’s experience of their learning and/or completion of specific tasks or assessments. The content will be designed by the student’s supervisor so as to ensure that the student can achieve the module’s learning outcomes and that the supervisor can assess that the learning outcomes have been met by the student.
