Module code: ES152
Credits: 7.5
Semester: 2
Department: HISTORY
International: No
Overview Overview

This second semester core module expands on some of the themes and topics to which European Studies students were introduced in the first semester. It introduces students to some of the big collective ideologies and political programmes of the last hundred years, explaining their historical origins and theoretical underpinnings and showing how these ideas continue to shape contemporary Europe. The module comprises two weekly lectures.
By the end of the module the students will have a sound understanding of the most important political ideologies in contemporary European Studies. They will understand their historical roots, their development, and their present-day manifestations in a range of European contexts. They will also have a solid understanding of the most important historical and political developments in Europe since the end of the First World War. Through the presentation and the mid-term essay, students will have carried out thorough independent research on two topics relating to the course material, whilst the end of semester examination will necessitate a complete reading of all course materials and notes.
