Module EQUINE LEISURE & TOURISM

Module code: EQ202
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: BUSINESS
International: Yes
Overview Overview

This module is designed to give students a comprehensive knowledge of the Irish equine leisure and tourism sector. In particular, the module will examine the economic importance and the potential for growth within this important sub sector of the Irish equine industry. This discussion is done in the context of current theory and best practice. The module reviews the general leisure and tourism industry in Ireland and internationally and then critically reviews the structure of the Irish equine leisure and tourism sector. This review includes size, nature, organisation and regulation relative to our main competitors. It will evaluate and critically review the work and policies of the governing bodies within the sector: Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Ireland, Horse Sport Ireland, Horse Racing Ireland, and the other relevant industry bodies who are involved in developing and promoting the sector.

It will also review and discuss the various disciplines and activities which make up the different sectors of the industry; in particular, it will examine the various ‘pathway’ organisations into equine leisure and explore their potential for development in the future.

Students will learn about and have the opportunity to discuss current and/or topical issues of concern with expert industry practitioners.
