	Overview
	The NUI Certificate in Equality Studies focuses on delivering a high quality relevant qualification using a unique blend of face to face introductory workshop and interactive online learning with full tutor support. This course will equip students with the knowledge and understanding needed to deal effectively and sensitively with the different equality and diversity issues at all levels of Irish society, the community and the workplace. This course is relevant to all who espouse the values of social inclusion and equality. It has particular resonance to private sector companies and businesses and staff of community and voluntary organisations who seek to create workplaces where diversity is prized as an asset for generating new ideas and new ways of working. The course will facilitate the development of individuals, team leaders and managers in having a real appreciation of the importance of equality, diversity and their impact on the organisation contributing to a supportive learning and development culture. It will equip individuals with the essential competencies necessary to meet the challenges of today's rapidly changing world. Module 1: Reflecting on Equality and Diversity: Reflective Practice; History, concepts and ideologies; Sources of prejudice and discrimination; Conducting practitioner research Module 2: The Shape of Irish Society: Demography; Irish State and legal system; Outline of Equality legislation. Module 3: Equality and Diversity in the Workplace: Equality through the employment cycle - Focus on models and practice in relation to gender, work life balance, age, ethnicity and disability Module 4: Delivering Equality: Development of equality and diversity policies; Managing equality and diversity issues - Recruitment and selection, Training and development; Facilitation and mentoring.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Become a reflective practitioner in the context of their own work. Understand the meaning of the terms equality and diversity Discuss the processes that underlie prejudice and discrimination in society Understand the skills and processes involved in conducting any writing practitioner research and understand the population structures and demography of Ireland Describe the Irish state and government; describe major aspects of employment law in Ireland focusing specifically on equality legislation; be familiar with theoretical models of equality-preference theory, labyrinth theory Understand the issues relating to work life balance. Be able to define disability and understand the main models of disability; be familiar with mental health issues Understand the issues relating to immigration and social change; be familiar with research into the travelling community; understand the difference between assimilation, multiculturalism and inter-culturalism Describe diversity in terms of the four layers model. Understand equality opportunity policies and practices throughout the employment cycle. Be able to discuss the factors which impact on diversity management and be familiar with the main concepts of coaching and mentoring within a diversity context .
