The aim of this module is to provide the student with a number of practical computational tools which may be used to study optical systems from both wave and ray viewpoints.
Module content: Interference, division of wavefront, division of amplitude, multiple beam interference, dielectric films, Fraunhofer diffraction, Fresnel diffraction, Fourier transforms, Fourier transform spectroscopy, numerical modelling of interference and diffraction, ray optics, computational ray tracing, optical instrumentation, Gaussian beam optics.
This module specifically addresses the following topics of the Core of Physics, as defined by Institute of Physics:
- Geometrical optics to the level of simple optical systems
- Interference and diffraction at single and multiple apertures
- Dispersion by prisms and diffraction gratings
