	Overview
	The aim of this module is to develop practical skills in statistical analysis and data reduction. Module content The Matlab environment is used to develop a suite of routines which have general applicability in a wide range of data reduction applications. Data sets with the desired properties are first simulated using Monte Carlo rejection, and separate functions are then used to analyse the data, comparing the results with the parameters used during the simulation stage.

Module content

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Carry out statistical tests on datasets produced by random number generators. Use Monte Carlo rejection to produce datasets drawn from continuous probability distributions. Analyse a set of Gaussian deviates (find mean, standard deviation, uncertainty on mean, interpretation of standard deviation in terms of probability) and study propagation of errors. Apply the principle of maximum likelihood in the context of linear least squares fitting on given data. Apply distribution testing (chi-squared test) to a given dataset. Analyse a time series using epoch folding and Fourier analysis to search for periodicities embedded in noise.
