Module CREATIVE PROSE WORKSHOP 1

Module code: EN6016
Credits: 10
Semester: Year-Long
Department: ENGLISH
International: No
Overview Overview

This module will be taught be intensive workshops, providing a space in which studnets will be guided towards honing their writing, reading, critical and self-editing skills. Working as a group, students will follow a curriculum of workshops desgined the by the seminar leader as an introduction to consideration of the formal, thematic and structural elements of their work. Sutdetns will explore a range of generic possibilities, both in their own work and by reading and hearing the work of other students, whule working with selected reading material, and this will allow students to learn to ‘read’ the ways in which, for example, dialogue, character, plot or setting function in a given text. The workshops thus provide a space in which students are asked to analyse and create literary work in a focused way.
Such analysis and discussion will lead into the production of students’ own work, which functions as the central aim of the module. Students will draft work on an ongoing basis through the term, presenting material in class in addition to receiving feedback from their lecturer. Developing editing skills is also key to these workshops, as students learn how to draft and revise writing through work on both their own and on other students’ work. Incorporating feedback from both peers and their lecturer, students will submit, at the end of term, a finished piece of writing in addition to draft material.
