Module code: EN6007
Credits: 15
Semester: Year-Long
Department: ENGLISH
International: No
Overview Overview

"This module will explore the evolution of a distinctly female literary tradition by considering continuities and changes in constructions of woman and gender from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. Through a close study of literary texts produced by women we will explore a number of key debates surrounding women, writing and gender as well as how women conceived of themselves as writers and thinkers. Students will also explore a variety of critical readings of women's writing in the field of feminist literary theory. Through our exploration of these key problematics, particular attention will be paid to issues of narrative voice, reader identification, and the novel’s function as a record of social norms and as an agent of historical change. Indicative Primary Texts: George Eliot, Middlemarch (1872); Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse (1927); Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937); Simone de Beauvoir, The Mandarins (1954)
Doris Lessing, The Golden Notebook (1962).
