Module ZIONISM, PALESTINIAN NATIONALISM AND CULTURE

Module code: EN6006
Credits: 15
Semester: Year-Long
Department: ENGLISH
International: No
Overview Overview

This module introduces students to a variety of cultural representations of the Israel-Palestine struggle. Using a range of documents, particularly novels and films, the creation and remaking of ‘Israeli’ and ‘Palestinian’ identities will be examined, and students will gain a sense of the importance of cultural representations and inscriptions in the politics of nationhood, exile, territory and dispossession. While reaching back to the founding moments of Zionism and Palestinian nationalism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the module will concentrate on the work of recent or living writers and film-makers, such as AB Yehoshua, Amos Oz, Ari Folman, Hani Abu-Assad, Samuel Maoz, Ghassan Kanafani, Emile Habiby and Jabra Ibrahim Jabra.
