This module will introduce students to various modes of contemporary cultural theory that deal with the complex relationship between literature, sexuality and gender. The initial part of this module will take the form of a series of lectures in which students will be introduced to key tenets and key varieties of modern feminist literary theory. The later part of the module will take a seminar form in which students will be required to read one or more classic works of literary or cultural criticism engaging with issues of literature and sexuality. The second part of the module will also deal with some the practical skills of critical essay writing including matters such as conducting independent research, the use of evidence and citation to support argument, and footnoting and bibliography.
