The Irish literary revival inherited a variety of forms of Irish nationalism, and a variety of forms of Irishness. This module will examine dialogues with the past in the work of such writers as Yeats, Synge, O’Casey and Joyce and the new, frequently contested, forms of Irish history, culture and identity that they produced. The course will consider the relationship between overlapping cultural and political revolutions as well as the creative ties and tensions linking a specifically Irish literary tradition with a broader European context of modernism.
