	Overview
	The Irish literary revival inherited a variety of forms of Irish nationalism, and a variety of forms of Irishness. This module will examine dialogues with the past in the work of such writers as Yeats, Synge, O�Casey and Joyce and the new, frequently contested, forms of Irish history, culture and identity that they produced. The course will consider the relationship between overlapping cultural and political revolutions as well as the creative ties and tensions linking a specifically Irish literary tradition with a broader European context of modernism.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Show a detailed understanding of the literature, politics and culture in late nineteenth century / early twentieth century Ireland, and of the relationship between text and context Demonstrate an ability to set Irish literature in an historical context Demonstrate an ability to make connections between differing genres of Irish writing and an ability to scrutinise political debates within Irish writing Show an ability to identify and analyse recurring themes and tensions in the literature of the period and within the relevant critical debates Write an essay on a chosen topic or topics, making convincing arguments based on reading primary and secondary texts Write responses to exam questions, making convincing arguments based on reading primary and secondary texts

Learning Outcomes

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	Where a student has passed the essay component and repeats the examination component of a module, the essay component will be carried forward from the previous attempt at the module. Repeat students who fail the essay component may submit all such material by the first Tuesday in August. Students without proven certified medical or other valid reasons must submit an essay of acceptable standard (C or higher); however, the mark awarded will be capped at 40%. Students will not be allowed to register to repeat externally for this module if they have not satisfactorily completed the seminar component of this module. Students wishing to register to repeat externally for this module thus require authorization from the Head of Department. University scheduled written examination (Autumn): 60 minutes
