This module invites you to recognise that description is a political act and asks whether we can begin to change the world by re-describing it. We will consider how our imaginings of place shape our attachments to particular places as well as our relationships – as individuals and citizens – to other people, races and nations and we will ponder some of the following questions: Who do we perceive as “native” or “alien” and why? How do our encounters with the particularities of a place shape our conceptions of these categories? Are some imaginings of place more legitimate than others? How might our re-imaginings of place and environment help us to re-conceive human relationships within or across geographical borders as well as our management of those borders and the environment itself?
