On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of major literary and cultural innovations associated with Romanticism;

Develop an understanding of the historical and cultural contexts from which Romanticism emerges;

Demonstrate an ability to read and understand a select number of exemplary texts in close detail; an ability to situate these texts in relation to each other, the ideas of literary periods and a range of contexts, historical and theoretical;

Participate in tutorial discussions; debate issues related to specific literary texts;

Develop and write a research essay on a chosen topic or topics, demonstrating the ability to integrate source material and critical readings; synthesise arguments; justify critical approaches and opinions; to construct a coherent, substantiated argument;

Show capacity to write clear, grammatically correct prose;

Identify and use relevant subject-specific electronic resources and other library and archival resources.
