Module CLIMATE MODELLING

Module code: EE642
Credits: 7.5
Semester: 2
Department: ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING
International: Yes
Overview Overview

How big and how rapid the climatic changes resulting from anthropogenic activities are likely to be are of acute concern for the entire global community and are the subjects of major research efforts worldwide. This module examines how various techniques enable a longer term perspective on climate to be obtained and the implications of modelling-based projections of the enhanced greenhouse effect for Ireland and other parts of the world will be studied. Lecture topics will inform students on the functioning of the climate system, numerical weather prediction, data assimilation, climate models, modeling techniques, atmospheric predictability and ensemble forecasting etc. Practical classes will supplement lectures and introduce students to various climate models such as the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model and issues surrounding such models. Ultimately, students should understand the fundamental principles of climate models, be capable of implementing a climate model, be able to analyse climate projections, understand the limitations of current climate models and be aware of the future challenges facing climate models.
