	Overview
	To give engineering students an experience of a large-scale design problem, with all the associated administrative, communication and managerial aspects. Each year the Department Lecturers provide a pool of suitable projects. Final Year Project takes place in the second semester. The list of projects, together with a one page description of each project, is made available to students prior to the start of the second semester. Students are encouraged to approach staff for further information on individual projects. Students must submit their preference list (with projects ranked in order of preference) within one week from the date that the list of projects is released. Projects are then allocated according to preference, taking into account staff workload and student position in class as determined by their 3rd year class average (excluding IWE). Students can also propose projects of their own (e.g. connected with their Industrial Work Experience) subject to the approval of the Department Final Year Project committee.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Demonstrate appropriate management techniques in the execution of their project (including time management and project planning). Combine technical expertise from multiple technical areas to design and specify solutions for their projects. Apply theoretical knowledge in solving problems they encounter. Develop and improve personal skills to undertake new challenges posed by their project. Demonstrate competent technical communication skills (including meeting, presentation and reporting). Discuss any ethical issues, environmental impacts and health and safety issues associated with their project.

Penalties: Late submission of reports will be subject to a penalty of 10% of the assessment grade for each day (or part thereof) overdue.

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes Final year projects can only be repeated by repeating the year. Students will be required to undertake a new project and will have their mark capped at 40%. However, students who obtain between 35 � 40% are eligible for supplemental assessment over the summer period. In such instances, the final module grade will be capped at 40%. Written permission from the IEC Head of Department must be obtained before registering for the supplemental repeat.
