On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:
-
1. Determine and motivate appropriate power/bandwidth requirements and modulation scheme for data transmission over an arbitrary time-invariant noisy channel.
-
2. Describe different channel access methods used in wireless communications (time, frequency, code).
-
3. Recognise different multipath channel types (flat vs non-flat / slow vs fast fading) and display an understanding of the issues associated with data transmission over these channels.
-
4. Identify and use orthogonal signals for transmission, and interpret these signals in signal space (constellation diagrams).
-
5. Describe the transmission of data using various modulation schemes, including multi-tone modulation and spread spectrum communications.
-
6. Analyse the performance of different diversity reception methods.
