The aims of this module are (1) To introduce students to the principles of materials, atomic structures, and semi-conductor material physics. (2) To study the application of these principles in the construction of electronic devices. Indicative Syllabus: *Bohr and Quantum mechanical pictures of the hydrogen atom. *Bonds between atoms; Ionic Bonds; Covalent Bonds; Metallic bonds. *Crystals and crystalline solids; close-packed structures; lattice parameters; X-ray diffraction. *Semiconductor physics - band theory; n-type and p-type semiconductors; *majority & minority carriers; effective mass; carrier concentrations; *Hall effect; Drude & Bloch Theories of electrical conduction; *Fermi-Dirac distribution and Fermi level; optical properties of semiconductors. *Transistor equations (FET and BJT), comparison of performance, manufacturing technologies and examples of same. |
