	Overview
	The aim of this module is to introduce students to the physics of vibrations, waves and light, and electromagnetism, and to tutor them in the solution of elementary problems in these areas. Vibrations and Waves: (6 lectures) Elasticity and simple harmonic motion; Pendulums; Damped Harmonic Oscillators; The nature of waves; The mathematical description of a wave; Transverse and longitudinal waves Linear superposition Standing waves and Sound Light: (6 Lectures) The electromagnetic spectrum; Polarization Reflection, refraction and dispersion; Lenses; Coherence and diffraction Electromagnetism: (12 lectures) Origins of Electricity, Coulomb’s Law, Electric Fields, and Electric Field Lines; Electric potential and Electric Potential Energy, Voltage, Capacitors and Capacitance Magnetic Fields and Forces, Basic Circuits.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: describe the fundamental principles of electricity and magnetism; discuss the techniques required to analyze simple electric circuits; analyze the behaviour of sound and light in various physical situations using the theory of vibrations and waves; describe the operation of a variety of optical instruments using geometrical optics; solve simple numerical problems relevant to fundamental electricity and magnetism, optics and waves; carry out relevant laboratory experiments to demonstrate and test physical principles and report the results.

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes 1 x 2hr written examination. The continuous assessment mark is carried forward to the Autumn examinations, as there is no facility for a repeat practical examination.
