The aim of this module is to introduce students to the physics of vibrations, waves and light, and electromagnetism, and to tutor them in the solution of elementary problems in these areas. *Vibrations and Waves: (6 lectures) *Elasticity and simple harmonic motion; Pendulums; Damped Harmonic Oscillators; *The nature of waves; The mathematical description of a wave; Transverse and longitudinal waves *Linear superposition *Standing waves and Sound *Light: (6 Lectures) *The electromagnetic spectrum; Polarization *Reflection, refraction and dispersion; Lenses; Coherence and diffraction *Electromagnetism: (12 lectures) *Origins of Electricity, Coulomb’s Law, Electric Fields, and Electric Field Lines; *Electric potential and Electric Potential Energy, Voltage, Capacitors and Capacitance *Magnetic Fields and Forces, Basic Circuits. |
