This module offers students opportunities to study and to put into practice strategies for teaching and learning across cultures and with respect to developing global citizenship. It identifies key educational issues concerning migration and race, Travellers, LGBTQ and gender. Its overall aim is to prepare students for developing culturally appropriate modes of relating to students and to integrate concepts concerning cultural, racial, and social diversity into teaching, learning and assessment practices.
The module focuses on developing a sense of teacher professional responsibility with respect to teaching across cultures. The module focuses on:
1. Key issues in education for global citizenship, with attention paid to issues of cultural diversity in both global and national contexts;
2. Concepts and ideas informing responsive pedagogies that have emerged out of these issues, including culturally responsive pedagogy, anti-racist pedagogy, feminist pedagogy, multicultural and
intercultural pedagogy.
3. Pedagogical strategies that can inform students’ teaching within their educational settings.
