On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• Articulate a knowledge and appreciation of the major counselling theories.
• Demonstrate that they have discussed and reflected on the various theories of counselling and have developed an understanding of their own psychological development and its relationship to the practice of counselling.
• Manifest a working knowledge of how counselling theories and skills assist counsellors in addressing the psychological needs of young people.
• Appreciate how their own life narrative can affect the counselling relationship.
• Evaluate their own style of counselling practice in a self-reflective way.
• Demonstrate a clear understanding of professional boundaries.
• Conduct one-to-one counselling sessions competently with young people aged 12-18 years.

The module explores counselling theories and their relationship to psychological development. Counselling skills and process are practiced with an emphasis on integrating theories, practice and life experience. Students will demonstrate that they have discussed and reflected on the various theories of counselling and have developed an understanding of their own psychological development and its relationship to the practice of counselling.
