Managing the school guidance service is a multifaceted process. The module intensively explores this area of competence for the guidance counsellor, including: • Guidance Counselling Management; Guidance service policy and planning; Needs, assessments and evaluation; Consultation, negotiation, networking and communication; Ethics; Pastoral Care; Legal studies; Equality and Multicultural studies; Learning Difficulties. • Reflection on professional values; development of professional mission statement. • Integration of models of best practice, personal counselling, career counselling and vocational theories and school placement experience including Information processing and management • Examination of the Role and Activities of the School Guidance Counsellor in Irish Second Level Schools in the 21st century. • The process of Planning the School Guidance Programme. • Resources – including human resources. Networking and Support. • Critical Incident Management. • Ethics. • Legal studies. • Equality and Intercultural studies. • Learning difficulties. • Access programme. Students are required to conduct a substantial research project in their placement schools, which will involve data collection, critical analysis and reflection on the findings in the context of educational practice, research and thinking. This module aims to provide the students with the skills to critically engage in the practice of guidance and counselling in a school setting and to facilitate the integration of new knowledge and of how personal and institutional stories interweave.
