Module PLACEMENT LEARNING

Module code: EDF620
Credits: 25
Semester: Year-Long
Department: FROEBEL EDUCATION
International: Yes
Coordinator: Séamie O'Neill (FROEBEL EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

This module is designed to prepare students for School Placement (SP). It address challenges in pupil care and the needs of children with special educational needs.

A key focus of the module is the creation of an inclusive Froebelian environment. The module examines the role of parents as partners in the education system. It examines educational legislation pertinent to primary schools. Issues which practicing teachers often find personally challenging during their careers will be interrogated, along with the role of external agencies in school communities.

With regard to Inclusive Education, key concepts underpinning educational provision for pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) are examined in greater depth and at a more sophisticated level than year one. Guidelines and supports provided by the DES and other government agencies are discussed and students are required to develop knowledge of the characteristics associated with particular disabilities in addition to the range of specific methodologies and specialist resources/equipment available to support learning. Students are required to assess, plan interventions and monitor the progress of children with special educational needs on school placement.

'Challenges in Pupil Care' is one component of this module. Students will explore how contextual factors in the lives of children impact on school life and participation. Particular attention will be paid to children who are bereaved, struggling with parental separation, coming through the asylum process, living in families with addiction or who witness domestic violence.

Students will undertake training in Children First, learn about the role of Tusla and the role of teachers in the Meitheal process. This element of the module is not specifically assessed though full participation is required.

The student teacher will be required to undertake an extended ten-week placement. The student teacher will take responsibility for teaching the class for the entire school day. While on the extended SP, students will become familiar with general school procedures and policies such as staff meetings, parent-teacher meetings, preparing pupil reports, communicating with parents and engaging with extra-curricular activities. In this way, students are experiencing the school as a living and learning community through observing the interactions between staff, pupils, parents and external agencies.

On all placements, students are expected to work closely with their co-operating teachers and engage in professional dialogue and learning in an effort to make connections between placement experience and educational theories

Due to Covid 19 opportunities for School Placement may be limited
