Module MATHEMATICS AND CURRENT ISSUES IN SEN

Module code: EDF554
Credits: 5
Semester: Year-Long
Department: FROEBEL EDUCATION
International: No
Coordinator: Deirdre Forde (FROEBEL EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

Students are introduced to the nature and range of difficulties which pupils across the SEN spectrum experience with mathematics. These in turn are related to the strategies and resources appropriate to the particular difficulties. They have further input on particular low-incidence disabilities. Aspects of ICT of particular relevance to pupils with physical impairment are covered, together with hardware and software of wider application in the general SEN area. Students working on either side of the primary / post-primary divide are presented with findings from relevant literature and examples of best-practice pertaining to transition. Students address ethical / responsibility issues arising from the context where considerable discretion is devolved to schools / teachers in identifying pupils’ special educational needs and ensuring that the education the pupils receive is appropriate.
