This module is designed to provide students with a wide-ranging and comprehensive overview of the range of reading disabilities as well as information about related difficulties of writing and spelling. There is a comprehensive and balanced examination of the reading process and of the varying theories and practices relating to reading difficulties. Students are introduced to the most effective assessment strategies and teaching practices; the issues and trends raised in relation to intervention are evidence-based. Information is provided in relation to definitions, characteristics, diagnosis, intervention learning styles and eligibility / placement issues. The role of speech / language in any specific or general reading difficulty is explored as is the possible co-occurrence of motor-related difficulties. Students are provided with a range of possible diagnostic approaches to intervention.
