Overview Overview

The Language of Love/ Teanga an Ghrá elective will focus on the feeling of empathy and love and how this can be manifested in stewardship of the environment. An awareness of how our words can impact on human behaviour with regard to environmental issues such as food waste and the fight against single use plastic will be explored. The elective will be conducted through the lens of a Froebelian Ecofeminist philosophy.

The sessions will include digital learning, indoor and outdoor activities, and environmental detective work in and out of the classroom in a participatory research approach. This elective will equip the students with a store of project content and language and literacy ideas across the SESE and language curricula. The participants will also trace a historical timeline of environmental awareness using significant figures in Irish and world history. We will follow in the environmental footsteps of Douglas Hyde, Ireland’s first President, due to his fervent love for the natural world and rugged Irish landscape. Aspects of this, he maintained, can only be truly described through the Irish language. This elective will help to unlock this aspect of our national psyche - our love of the land so often culturally reinforced by our language. Particular emphasis will be placed upon the Sustainable Development Goals, The Ethics of Care and the SESE strand of Environmental Awareness and Care. The Language of Love/ Teanga an Ghrá will be a bilingual elective, providing students with resources and the language to conduct dynamic CLIL lessons in SESE. This elective embraces a pedagogy of Community Engaged Learning and the importance of increasing biodiversity and nurturing the biophilia response.
