Semester: Year-Long

Overview Overview

This module is designed to encourage students to nurture their own creativity, particularly in the area of creative writing. This is an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of approaches to writing which can be transferred to the primary school classroom. This module will strengthen the confidence of the students in their delivery of creative writing skill development in the classroom both in English and Irish.
Prior experience in creative writing is not a requirement of the course, however an openness for curiosity, imaginative play and an authentic writing experience is beneficial! Throughout the sessions, students will engage in activities designed to ignite the writer within. Elements such as the writing practice, drafting, final draft, characterisation, dialogue will be explored. The necessity of editing will be discussed and practised.

Students will have opportunities to share their work with others and engage in productive discussion whilst developing assessment and critiquing skills. In addition to engaging in creative writing, students will be encouraged to read texts in selected genres. The module will be facilitated bilingually and students will be required to engage in writing activities in both English and Irish. Throughout the module students will be encouraged to keep a creativity log which records their engagement in independent tasks related to the module.

“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
Maya Angelou
