Overview Overview

An aim of this Elective is the creation of appealing film resources to encourage Art and literacy skills for integrated teaching in Primary classrooms. Year 4 students will have opportunities to learn StoryBoard techniques and Script-writing, whilst developing their own film resource as a teaching aid. Practical work and active, hands-on learning are key aspects of this elective. Along with developing a specialisation in Visual Art education, students will create “Claymation” figures and suitable backdrops to develop a short film on a concept of their choice from any discipline/s. The possibilities for cross-curricular study and project work in the classroom are key features of this elective. Apart from using their own film in teaching, students will discover how to create similar fun resources with their pupils. The examination of an historical era or scientific invention can promote enquiry-based learning, whilst a focus on story-telling through script writing enables development of literacy skills in English/Gaeilge. Guest lecturers in Media Studies and teachers who use similar film resource in classrooms will be invited to support students in their work. The need for “Openness and sensitivity to art” as “the basis for developing a critical faculty” is emphasised in the Visual Arts curriculum and reflected in this module. The importance of depth of experience, questioning and reflecting (P.S.C 1999, Visual Arts Education, Teacher Guidelines, p121) informs the process of creative story-telling thus encouraging a spirit of enquiry in their teaching and learning
