This module will address the role of language teaching in the primary school environment. It will examine both of the principle classroom languages in Ireland, English and Irish, and also additional language instruction. It will investigate: • current theory, policy and best practice in teaching languages and the principles that underpin these positions • strategies and approaches for teaching those learning English as an additional language (EAL learners) • the connections between languages, identity and self-esteem and the importance of home language maintenance • support materials available for teaching languages, with a particular focus on EAL learners • the possible introduction of a modern language in primary school • the role of ICT in language teaching and learning • personal reflections on experiences as language learners to identify successful teaching and learning approaches This module will be facilitated bilingually.
