This bilingual module traces ideologies and issues around identity, diversity and belonging in 20th and 21st century visual narratives for young people. Over the course of the elective five English-language and five Irish-language literature primary texts (graphic novels, picturebooks, animated television series and illustrated youth media) will be surveyed from an interdisciplinary perspective, using literary, historical, psychological, and cultural approaches. In particular, the module will focus on narrative techniques, diversity issues, the translation process, the didactic elements of stories for young people, and discourses of nationhood and identity in modern popular youth culture as reflected in texts in both English and Gaeilge.
