	Overview
	This module highlights the relationship between schools and the wider society. Acknowledging that this association is critical and complex, the module explores the dynamics at play and contextualises them against a theoretical framework of social justice and equality. An analysis of historical perspectives on this relationship encourages students to see the cyclical nature of such knowledge and deepens their understanding of the interrelationship between the individual foundation subjects. Indeed, by referring to significant studies in the areas of Sociology of Education, Philosophy of Education and Psychology of Education, students are encouraged to consider their own classroom experience against a backdrop of national and international history and research, the evolution of relevant legislation and the emerging perspectives on Special Education.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Examine the relationship between complex social issues like, for example, class and denominational education systems have on educational outcomes Integrate this knowledge into their practice as teachers Identify the roles of the main stakeholders in Irish education Analyse the Irish education system against a framework of national and international research, including relevant legislation and Special Education perspectives Compare and contrast the Irish education system with the education systems in a number of other jurisdictions Critically reflect upon issues relating to Social Justice, Equality as a Philosophical Concept and Ethics and apply them to everyday schools experiences Demonstrate knowledge of the contribution of key theorists (Freire, Gandhi, Tagore) and writers (Lynch, Devine, Drudy and Gilborne, for example) to this field Consider the evolution of education systems historically and understand the relevance of this to modern education systems.
