On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• Review the history of childcare in Ireland and develop an understanding of the main stakeholders in the sector and their roles;
• Develop an awareness of the professional skills required to be a good early years’ educator;
• Demonstrate an ability to interact effectively with young children and support their play ideas;
• Work effectively as part of a team and Identify why and how observations should be carried out in an early year’s setting;
• Recognise how observations of learning and for learning differ;
• • Demonstrate, through the development of a portfolio, their ability to: o carry out a range of observations in different contexts o evaluate observations using theories of early child development and o support programme planning for individual and groups of children and make recommendations for learning
• Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical implications of being a professional early years’ educator;
• Identify the impact placement practice has on personal learning and professional goals.
