	Overview
	The module is an introduction to the history, theories and philosophies underpinning early childhood care and education from Rousseau to the present day. It will interrogate current practices and provision against a rich backdrop of philosophers and theorists including: Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Froebel, Steiner, Isaacs, McMillan, Montessori, Dewey, Freire, Malaguzzi etc. Integral to this module will be the examination and theorising of childhood through a social, cultural and political lens to understand the changing constructions of childhood through time.

Overview

The module is an introduction to the history, theories and philosophies underpinning early childhood care and education from Rousseau to the present day. It will interrogate current practices and provision against a rich backdrop of philosophers and theorists including:
Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Froebel, Steiner, Isaacs, McMillan, Montessori, Dewey, Freire, Malaguzzi etc.
Integral to this module will be the examination and theorising of childhood through a social, cultural and political lens to understand the changing constructions of childhood through time.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Locate the historical, social, cultural and political constructions of childhood; Identify the history, theories and philosophies that have influenced practices in early childhood care and education (birth to six years); Explore the development of the early childhood education sector in Ireland; Establish philosophies of early childhood care and education within current practice in early childhood settings in Ireland; Explore international perspectives of early childhood education.
