	Overview
	There are many ways of defining quality in the field of education; definitions that reflect the underlying assumptions about the purpose of education in today’s world. But how we conceive the purpose of education has a deep effect on what we view as good teaching and learning, thereby impacting on our resultant definition of quality. Using historical, philosophical and curricular/pedagogic lenses, this module will examine different perspectives on a fundamental question: what constitutes quality in teaching and learning in the 21st century?

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Demonstrate an advanced capability in interrogating and making discerning judgements on issues of quality in teaching and learning Critique existing and often conflicting definitions of quality in teaching and learning and develop an understanding of the competing perspectives in the field of education Challenge their own assumptions about quality in education and formulate a coherent and well-informed personal definition of quality in teaching and learning
