Overview Overview

School placement is an integral element of initial teacher education. School placement on the PME is of critical importance and provides student teachers with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge and develop skills in lesson planning, development and evaluation. Over the course of the two-year PME, student teachers will undertake placement in at least two different schools. It is the responsibility of the student teacher to source each school placement.

In year 1 of the PME, student teachers will spend two days per week in school from late August until late May (Thursdays and Fridays) and a three-week block placement in January. There is an expectation that following a period of observation in the placement school, student teachers will teach four classes per week in semester 1, ten classes per week during block placement and eight classes per week in semester 2. The number of classes is reduced for student teachers teaching one-hour classes. Student teachers are expected to be in their placement school for entire school days and in addition to teaching classes, they are expected to engage in and contribute as fully as possible to the wider life of the school. Five credits of ED622 (School placement) is allocated to a Teaching Lab. This consists of students working in groups on campus to role-play teaching in an enjoyable, safe and supportive. This element enables students on the programme to get to know each other and work closely together to develop relevant professional skills: communication, team work, handling multi-media effectively etc.

Each student teacher will be expected to work closely with one or more co-operating teachers. Opportunities for discussion about observations, teaching and school-based activities will be provided at university-based tutorials. Student teachers are expected to behave professionally both inside and outside the school, in line with the Teaching Council’s Code of Professional Conduct for Teachers (Teaching Council, 2016).The student teacher will be supported and assessed through at least three visits during the year. These placement visits will be undertaken by at least two different tutors. Further support will normally be provided by co-operating teachers and partner schools. Please note that you will not be able to begin school placement until you have completed the Vetting process with Maynooth University and have received a Vetting Disclosure statement. Please see the PME 1 Student Handbook for further details on School Placement.
