Module TEACHER AS CRITICALLY REFLECTIVE PRACTITIONER – THE FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATIONAL THINKING 1

Module code: ED621
Credits: 15
Semester: Year-Long
Department: EDUCATION
International: No
Coordinator: Angela Rickard (EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

This 15-credit module is based around the four key disciplines of education, namely history of education, psychology of education, sociology of education and philosophy of education. Its purpose is to support and enhance students’ reflections in their journey of becoming teachers and to think critically and carefully about the important concepts underpinning their professional practice. The module provides a range of lenses and perspectives for the interrogation of key educational themes and topics, such as the purposes of education, equality, inclusion, democracy, gender and assessment. Each discipline is explored in cycles over the year and the student cohort is divided into four groupings. The approach is designed to encourage students to develop a holistic view of education as a practice and to enable them to apply pertinent research insights to challenges encountered in their own practice. Challenging students’ own assumptions and beliefs and supporting them to articulate their own stances and perspectives across a range of issues are core to the module. Extensive discussion on and critique of key readings, theories and documentation are central features of the inquiry-based approach of the sessions within each cycle.

Students will engage with each of the four disciplines for a 6-week period across the year in small group contexts and will be supported by both lecturers and academic mentors. While each cycle focuses on one of the foundation disciplines, lecturers and academic mentors will enable students to forge linkages and identify themes within and across the cycles. The module will be assessed through four different assignments, one following each of the cycles. Assessment will include group presentations, poster presentations, individual written assignments and a group written assignment.
