This module leads student teachers to reflect critically on their work and it provides a research-informed context for such reflection. It is interdisciplinary in Semester 1 and it draws on insights from the Philosophy of Education, Sociology of Education, History and Structure of Irish Education and Educational Psychology to allow for different perspectives on a range of key themes and topics to be interrogated. Such themes and topics include: educational aims and their justification, psychological insights on learning and teaching, self-evaluation, inclusion, selection, learning support, sociological factors in learning, professional collaboration and the ethics of educational practice. The module is designed to encourage student-teachers to develop a holistic view of education as a practice and to enable them to apply pertinent research insights to challenges encountered in their own practice. This means that any theory that features in this module arises from the necessities of reflective practice itself. Problem-based learning and case study approaches are extensively used.
As the students become more familiar with the contributions of the various components of the module (Semester 1 of Yr 1), more disciplinary work in the foundation disciplines is introduced. The interdisciplinary focus is resumed in Yr 2, now with the more advanced purpose of cultivating higher levels of proficiency and creativity in critical pedagogical reflection.
Specific components include: Educational Psychology Sociology of Education Philosophy of Education History and Structure of Irish Education
