The focus of this module will be on active pedagogies. Students will consider the influences of the wider community, school ethos and classroom interactions on mathematics instruction. Issues related to assessment for, of and as learning will be examined. The use of ICT in mathematics teaching and learning will be explored. Teaching mathematics in contexts that allow learners to see connections within mathematics, between mathematics and other subjects, and between mathematics and its applications to real life will form a central theme in this module. Students will examine the nature of mathematics and of mathematics learning, through engagement with research literature and lesson study in professional learning groups.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this module, the student will be able to:
• identify key concepts in mathematics pedagogy
• combine content knowledge of mathematics with appropriate pedagogical strategies in teaching for understanding
• deploy a range of pedagogical tools, including ICT, resources to support students’ learning of mathematics
• explore the needs of various groups of students and consider the range of factors that can influence learning outcomes
• apply mathematical knowledge and skills to solve problems in familiar and unfamiliar contexts
• critically interrogate application of theory to practice in real contexts
• demonstrate understanding of relevant assessment practices.
