This 5 credit elective stream is designed to support a critical analysis of the role of education as a force for social justice, civic engagement and equality. In doing so, it explores issues of relevance to contemporary education systems relating to inclusion, civic engagement, and equality through explorations of gender, disability, adolescence, sexuality and race/ethnicity. The module draws on education policies, case studies, contemporary theoretical perspectives and published research studies to introduce a subject that is central to our understanding of the role of education in society. In doing so, the module draws on perspectives from sociology, philosophy and psychology to frame issues of social justice and equality.

This module seeks to give participants the opportunity to practice and appraise their critical reflective skills in a supportive environment, through critical reflection on the social justice implications of education. This module will mobilise a range of creative pedagogical strategies and approaches to assessment in order to scaffold and deepen students' understanding.

Objectives:
1. Develop an understanding of the social, egalitarian and political context of Irish education.
2. Introduce learners to theories of education, social justice and equality.
3. Build capacity for critical reflection about the social justice implications of key contexts in education.
4. Give learners the opportunity to practice and appraise their critical reflective skills in a supportive environment.
5. Encourage critical reflection on the social justice implications of education.
