This module introduces the student to the discipline of Psychology of Education. It adopts a thematic approach and covers topics related to the physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development of adolescents. Topics covered will include: genetic and environmental influences on behaviour; puberty; cognitive development, including the theories of Piaget, Vygotsky, and Bruner; peer relationships; bullying; issues of risk and resilience in young people. Throughout the course students will be encouraged to develop their reflective skills, and to bring a psychological perspective to the experiences they encounter in their school-based practice.
The module will also introduce the student teachers to the theory and practice of classroom management. They will explore the capacities needed for the promotion of inquiry-based science and maths education. They will examine ways in which social constructivism contributes to the development of useful theoretical frameworks for mathematics and science pedagogy. Students will explore key issues in science and maths education through engagement with research literature and interrogation of their own experiences. Contextual issues, including recent developments nationally and internationally will be explored.
