Module code: EC216
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: ECONOMICS
International: Yes
Coordinator: Dr Gerda Dewit (ECONOMICS)
Overview Overview

The course begins with a short exposition of why the history of economic thought matters to current students of economics and to students of social sciences in general. Starting with mercantilism, the course then examines the classical economic thinkers (such as Smith, Ricardo and Malthus), after which we turn to Marxist economics and non-mainstream economic thinkers such as Veblen. Subsequently, we study neoclassical economists (e.g., Marshall, Walras), followed by Keynesianism and the study of Schumpeter's ideas. The course ends by looking at some newer developments in economic thought.
