• identify and critically discuss the key philosophical and methodological concepts in social scientific research.
• reflect on and speak/write confidently (and on the basis of appropriate evidence) about the relationship between theory and method in social research;
• examine the role of practitioner research and associated methodologies in generating knowledge of practice
• make informed judgements as to the appropriateness and adequacy of given research questions or ‘research problems’ and as to the suitability of particular research methods for addressing such questions/problems;
• articulate the ethical dimensions of social research practice with particular reference to community work and youth work settings
• apply all of the above insights in the context of the social professions and specifically with regard to the practice of youth work/community work
• demonstrate key skills in practice research

• The module is taught through a combination of lecture inputs, practical group and individual exercises, workshops, self-directed learning and supervision exploring particular issues or methods in-depth.

• Pass standard: 40%

• Full attendance is required at every scheduled class. Penalties will be applied if attendance falls below 80%.
