The aim of this module is to examine the concepts of ‘Youth’ & ‘Community’ from a critical sociological perspective. ‘Youth’ and ‘Community’ are important concepts not only as terms which denote the social categories or groups with whom practitioners are engaged and whose interests they are concerned to promote, but also as clusters of ideas and assumptions - often unspoken - which shape and inform youth and community work practices, and understandings of the social world (Devlin, 2008). The aim of this module is to attempt to make these (often conflicting) ideas and assumptions explicit; to provide an introduction to the key concepts, theories and key debates in the study of youth and of community; to explore the concepts of youth and community (and other, related concepts) from a variety of theoretical perspectives; to examine empirical studies of communities and of young people in Ireland and elsewhere; and to explore the political and ideological dimensions of these key concepts and their relationship with class, gender, ethnicity, culture and identity, and other areas of contemporary debate.
